One of our skilled plastic surgeons will meet with you for an initial consultation to explain all aspects of liposuction, talk with you about your goals, and determine if this procedure is the right option for you.
Liposuction Recovery and Results
As with any surgery, liposuction patients can expect to experience some temporary swelling and bruising; however, any post-operative discomfort can be alleviated with oral pain medication. Depending on your individual needs, our doctors may recommend a compression garment to be worn in the days following surgery, which can aid in the healing process. Most liposuction patients return to work and their daily activities about one week after surgery. Our surgeon will advise you to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks in order to ensure proper healing.

Can liposuction help me lose weight?
Liposuction is not designed to be a weight loss method. However, this procedure may be able to help you achieve your body contouring goals when exercise and dietary changes prove ineffective. Liposuction is best used to address pockets of stubborn fatty tissue on virtually any area of the face or body, such as the thighs, hips and flanks, abdomen, neck, and back. Many patients find that having liposuction motivates them to maintain their health and preserve their results—in that respect, liposuction can be viewed as an adjunct to traditional weight loss methods. If you have questions about whether this treatment is appropriate for your needs and desired outcome, our plastic surgeons will discuss your options during your initial consultation.
What’s the difference between traditional liposuction and VASER LipoSelection®?
VASER LipoSelection® is an advanced new technique that makes it possible to eliminate a greater volume of fatty tissue with improved speed, comfort, and efficiency. Both traditional liposuction and VASER LipoSelection® use small cannulas, or tubes, to extract the fat. VASER LipoSelection® also uses ultrasound technology to help break down the fat cells. This allows your surgeon to reduce excess fluid loss and maximize results. Each patient’s characteristics, treatment plan, and desired outcome is unique, and the right approach for you will depend on these and other factors, which we will go over during your initial visit.
When can I return to work and my daily schedule?
If your routine involves office work or other low-impact activity, you should be able to return to your regular schedule after about one week. In some cases this estimate may be a little longer or shorter depending on your individual rate of healing and daily duties, and we recommend you listen to your body during recovery to help determine where you are in the process. We advise against strenuous exercise for about one month after the procedure, although you may begin to work in lighter recreation beforehand. We can discuss which types of activities are appropriate based on your interests at your initial consultation and at any point during your recuperation. We’re here to help make your experience the best it can be, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.
Are the results permanent?
Yes—as long as you maintain a stable, healthy weight, your results should be permanent. In the event that you gain weight, however, changes in body contour may become apparent. Fatty tissue may accumulate in the treated areas or it may develop somewhere new; every person experiences this circumstance a little differently. Minor fluctuations in weight should not have a long-term impact on your results, and we recommend living a healthy and active lifestyle to best preserve your outcome.
What will the scars look like?
Most patients find the residual scars from liposuction to be very small and relatively inconspicuous. The location and number of incisions will vary depending on the details of your treatment plan, including where and how many areas you have treated. If you are concerned about scarring, we can discuss what you should expect from the outcome and whether laser skin resurfacing for scar reduction might be beneficial for your results.
