Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia is a very common condition among men. Characterized by an enlargement of the male breasts, gynecomastia can have a pronounced impact on one’s self esteem. With male breast reduction surgery, our plastic surgeons at New York Plastic Surgical Group can remove excess fat, skin, and/or glandular tissue from the breasts and give the chest a recontoured and renewed appearance.

What causes gynecomastia?

For most men, gynecomastia begins to develop in adolescence. It has been estimated to affect approximately 40-60% of adults. The medical community is still unsure of the exact cause of gynecomastia; however, the following factors are believed to possibly contribute to this condition:

  • Puberty
  • Irregularities in testicular hormone production
  • Liver function irregularities
  • Certain prescription medications)
  • Steroid use
  • Marijuana use
  • Herbal testosterone additives
  • Obesity
  • Klinefelter Syndrome
  • Gilbert’s Syndrome
  • Certain prescription and over the counter medication

Fortunately, men do not need to live with gynecomastia. Male breast reduction surgery can successfully re-contour the chest for a more toned appearance.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

During the consultation process, your NYPSG plastic surgeon will perform a physical examination, discuss your expectations, and determine if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction. Male breast reduction surgery is not intended for patients who are trying to lose weight. Traditional weight loss methods are recommended before undergoing male breast reduction surgery.

In most cases, our plastic surgeon will begin the male breast reduction process by making an incision around the areola or in the armpit. This allows the doctor to remove any excess fat, skin, or glandular breast tissue. Depending upon the needs of the patient, liposuction may be used to assist in fat reduction. The male breast reduction surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure and can typically be completed in one to two hours.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery and Results

Patients will likely experience mild swelling or bruising after male breast reduction surgery, though these side effects should resolve quickly. Most individuals can expect to return to their normal activities a few days after the procedure. Residual scarring from the incisions is typically very light and barely noticeable. Our doctor will talk with you about all aspects of the surgical and recovery process with you during the initial consultation and answer any questions you may have.

What is gynecomastia and pseudo-gynecomastia?

While some physicians’ definitions may vary slightly, general consensus is that gynecomastia is a condition in which excess glandular tissue develops in the chest area of a man. In some cases, fatty tissue may also be present. Pseudo-gynecomastia is generally associated with excess fatty tissue only. Each of these issues can be difficult for the people they affect, and we offer treatment for both variations of the disorder. We will customize our approach to suit the unique nature of the concern as well as the patient’s needs and goals.

Are there non-surgical gynecomastia treatment options?

If excess fat is the primary concern and not excess glandular tissue, non-surgical treatments may be helpful. Additionally, altering one’s diet and exercise regimen can have an effect. If during the evaluation our surgeons suspect that a medical issue or lifestyle choice is contributing factor, we will look to address those influences first before recommending a surgical approach. If the condition is true gynecomastia, then often the best course of action is to excise the excess glandular tissue. Liposuction can also be used to contour the area if fatty tissue is present. During your initial visit, our experienced plastic surgeon will review your options and guide you in choosing the optimal method for your desired outcome.

When can I return to work?

While everyone heals at their own unique rate, patients generally return to their daily schedule within a week of surgery. It’s important to continue abstaining from vigorous exercise and activities for a month to six weeks to fully recover. Bruising and the majority of the swelling should fade quickly, with minor swelling continuing for several months or more. This effect is often so mild that many individuals are unaware of it. More specific recovery details will be provided to you prior to your operation.

What will the scars look like?

Patients are often concerned about the way the incisions will look following a cosmetic procedure, and reasonably so. Our skilled surgeons make every effort to utilize the smallest and most inconspicuous incisions possible. That said, it is impossible to completely eliminate all scars. Most patients find that the marks heal well and are relatively unnoticeable once completely mended. Should you desire it, we also offer laser skin resurfacing options through our Deep Blue Med Spa to further reduce the visibility of scars.
