Rhinoplasty can address a number of issues that individuals may have with the appearance or function of their nose, including:
- Nasal asymmetry
- A nose or nasal bridge that is too large or too small
- Bumps or depressions
- Nostrils that are too large
- An enlarged or drooping nasal tip
- Deviated septum
One of our plastic surgeons will meet with you to talk about your needs and answer your questions about rhinoplasty. Each rhinoplasty procedure is tailored to meet the patient’s unique desires and expectations. Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient surgery, performed under general anesthesia, and often takes about two hours to complete, depending on the extent of treatment. Our surgeons can create incisions in very inconspicuous areas on either the outside or inside of the nostrils, which will make any residual scarring virtually invisible. During the procedure, your nasal bone and cartilage will be delicately reshaped to conform to your treatment goals.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results
After rhinoplasty, a splint will be used to aid in the healing process and help the nose keep its new form. If septoplasty is also performed, internal splints will also be required. Our doctors recommend keeping your head elevated as much as possible in the days following your surgery to keep swelling at a minimum. They also recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and activity for about three weeks. As with most surgery, some bruising should be expected, though any discomfort can be alleviated with oral pain medication. Many patients are able to resume normal daily activities about one week after rhinoplasty surgery. Though you should notice improvement within the initial weeks following treatment, the full results of your surgery may not become evident for several months.

What techniques are available to achieve the desired result?
Multiple approaches can be used to provide the optimal outcome based on your individual anatomical needs and preferred appearance. A “closed” rhinoplasty is a technique where the incisions are placed within the nose, essentially leaving no visible scars. This method is not appropriate for all patients, and our surgeons will provide guidance as to whether this or another option will be best for you. An “open” rhinoplasty is the more common technique, and this procedure offers greater access to all the nasal structures. An incision is placed on the piece of skin that separates the nostrils, called the columella. The scar should heal well and become virtually unnoticeable once you’ve fully recovered.
Can this procedure help if I have a deviated septum?
Absolutely. Many patients receive a rhinoplasty, or more specifically a septoplasty, to address a deviated septum, which can cause breathing problems and other concerns. You can elect to correct the deviated septum alone or enhance the shape and angle of your nose as well. Your anatomic needs and cosmetic goals will help inform the development of a personalized treatment plan that best suits you.
Will there be visible scars?
In most cases, any scarring should be very minimal and inconspicuous. Some nose surgery techniques utilize internal incisions that should not be noticeable from the outside. In other approaches, a small incision is made on the underside of the nose along the fleshy bridge that separates the nostrils. This location is ideal to provide our surgeons with excellent access to the nasal structures and to also conceal evidence of treatment. During your initial consultation, your physician will show you where your incision will be placed and will discuss what to expect from the healing process.
When can I return to my normal routine?
Everyone’s rate of healing will be unique to them, and we encourage you to listen to your body to help determine your progress. That said, you should be able to return to work and your regular daily schedule after about five to seven days. Some bruising may still be visible and minor swelling will continue for some months after this point, but you should have a good idea of the results after a couple of weeks. We also ask that you avoid strenuous exercise for about three to four weeks to give your body ample time to recover. If you have any questions about which types of activities are permissible at various stages of recovery, we will be happy to go over the details during your initial visit.
Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
We offer a comprehensive selection of surgical and non-surgical treatments at our state-of-the-art practice, and we will customize your treatment plan to best serve your needs and goals. Some surgical procedures can provide more dramatic enhancement of the profile and assist in harmonizing facial features when combined with rhinoplasty, including chin and facial implants. If you’re considering facial rejuvenation, non-surgical cosmetic injectables and laser skin resurfacing can be used to revitalize the skin for a more youthful appearance. Talk to us about your concerns, and together we will find a way to help you achieve your desired outcome.
